Nemesis System Will Return In Grid Legends, “Evolved To Be More Persistent”

Grid Legends, the unexpected new entry to Grid after the 2019 reboot, will see the return of the nemesis system.

Speaking to Gamepsot, game director Chris Smith said: “The Nemesis makes a return to Grid Legends and we have evolved the system to be more persistent on and offline.

“We will talk more bout this when we start to deep dive into our online experience.”

In Grid 2019, the reboot introduced a nemesis system of sorts, where you can gain rivals, which later turn into a nemesis, if you continue to race hard and aggressive against your opponents. By hard and aggressive, we mean punting, slamming and trading paint kind of aggressive.

However, despite the ambitious claims from developer Codemasters during pre-release, including the ability to hold up to six nemeses in a race, it turned out rather disappointing. The AI doesn’t persistently carry that grudge throughout your career mode, only for that race.

So, instead of a Nemesis System, it’s more like a rival system you see in Burnout Takedown or Wreckfest, rather than Nascar Thunder 2004, one of the first instances of a racing game that added a mechanic similar to what we now know as the Nemesis System.

Hopefully, having it “more persistent” means that grudges do carry over in a long term, which makes for some more heated rivalries against the AI. Though the prospect of having a Nemesis system applying to online mode seems concerning.

Grid Legends was announced at EA Play Live 2021, and will feature a full-fledged Story Mode, like the old days of TOCA Racing Driver, the same series that evolved to what we know today as Grid.

Grid Legends will be out in 2022 for the PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
