Microsoft has launched the Surface Laptop Studio here in Malaysia, available beginning today.
Microsoft’s Surface lineup of hardware is usually Windows-based tablets that can turn into laptops. Well, except for the ones that are essentially laptops. Like this one, where it’s a laptop first, but can be converted into Stage Mode (screen pulls down closer, hiding the keyboard) or Studio Mode (essentially tablet mode, with the full screen facing down).
For the Surface Laptop Studio, Microsoft is billing this as the most powerful Surface yet, with good enough specs for gaming as well as the usual productivity and creative suite of features the line has always carried.

The Surface Laptop Studio also features quad omnisonic speakers (speakers that emits audio from under the keyboard) with Dolby Atmos support), two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports allowing you to plug up to two 4K-resolution external monitors and the Surface Slim Pen 2 which magnetically sticks to the Surface and can wirelessly charge by doing so.
Specs-wise, Malaysia is getting three variations of specs, two of which carries an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Ti, which is decent for mid-range gaming and includes ray-tracing support. On paper, the latter two specs can do a decent job with running the latest video games.
Just connect some for-gaming accessory like an Xbox controller via Bluetooth (there’ no built-in Xbox Wireless Adapter as seen in older Surface models) and you’re good to go.

Should you be getting a Surface Laptop Studio just for gaming? At that price point, maybe not.
However, if you are a content creator that would make use of the drawing tablet and the built-in stylus, or you need a laptop beefy enough for 3D rendering projects, or want a portable PC device that’s easier to lug around than a gaming laptop, with longer battery life than a gaming laptop but can also play some video games at a relatively decent performance, then this looks like a worthy purchase.
