Janda Cup Tekken 7 Tournament Culminated To A Rematch Between Arenz And Meat

Alongside the Armaggeddon Cup Street Fighter V tournament, Geek Empire Ampang also hosted one of the first Tekken 7 tournament in Malaysia after it’s console and PC launch. Janda Cup, organised by local streamer and Malaysian Fighting Game Community figure Azrul ‘Janda Hunter’ Anwar, was initially planned as a side mini-tournament. However, the reception from the hype of Tekken 7’s recent release to home consoles and PC had pulled a whopping number of 44 playersto join, including female players and children.

The 8 different pools eventually narrowed down to 16 players, with most of the players under the Flash Vision flag making it through. The winners finals was the clash of the two Southeast Asia titans: Mestre Arenz and Meat. These two had met each other at last year’s Southeast Asia Major finals which Meat took the win, but this was the first time since both of them are under the same team. After a long bout, Arenz advances to the Grand Finals.

But the breakout star of the tournament goes to Zaba. He faced Meat in the Top 16 and the bout led to both players frequently switching characters. The first round ended in Zaba’s favour as Bryan, prompting Meat to switch to Bryan. Once he got the upperhand in the mirror match, Zaba responded with a switch to Jack-7 and then to the hulking Gigas. With each player tied 2-2, Meat made one more switch to Bob and sealed the win.

Constant character changes are the name of the game throughout Janda Cup, as the game is still considered new (ignoring its arcade release), players are still trying out the whole roster and haven’t settled with a true main character yet.

Despite the loss, Zaba blazed his way from the losers brackets to reach the losers finals for another rematch with the Indonesian star. However, Meat managed to completely shut him down with a 3-0 win as Bob. Props to Zaba for holding his own and reaching third place.

The crowd at Geek Empire cheers on as Janda Cup reaches its Grand Finals match.

The grand finals was again another rematch between Meat and Arenz. The long bout was first in favour of Arenz who has now switched to his old main Eddy Gordo. His domination was more than just button mashing, Arenz makes good use of Eddy’s long reach and controlled the neutral game well.

Meat started with King but as Arenz secured his second match win, he made a character switch. Bringing out Dragunov brought him the much needed momentum to take the fight against Arenz that tied the game to match point for Arenz or a bracket reset for Meat. But Arenz took the last round with a series of swoop kicks and emerged victorious.

Congratulations to all the winners. Credit also goes to all the 43 people that turned up for Janda Cup as participants. The huge number of attendees is certainly speaking how hype Tekken 7 is now that it has its home release. With the success of Janda Cup, expect more Tekken 7 tournaments to pop around Malaysia in the near future.
