A new Hot Wheels game is coming this year, and is made by Milestone, famous for its bike racing games like the official MotoGP games and the Ride series. (They’ve also done car racing games in the past, like the Screamer series)
Hot Wheels Unleased is an arcade racer where you race through the trademark orange tracks in die-cast toy cars as you would expect from the brand.
A 20-minute-ish livestream by Milestone showcased the first gameplay for Hot Wheels Unleashed, and unlike Forza Horizon 3’s Hot Wheels DLC, Unleashed is an arcade racer through and through. The tracks are really wide at corners and there’s brake-to-drift, with a maybe too wide camera angle when you drift around corners. And yes, drifting gets you boost.
There will also be boss fights (something you don’t expect in a racing game), 2-player split-screen, and also a track editor.
The gameplay stream also revealed that there will be over 60 different Hot Wheels toy cars you can drive around in, all re-created to resemble the look of the actual toys- mould lines and all. The six that was shown in the gameplay showcase are:
- Rodger Dodger
- Twin Mill
- Sharkruiser
- Dragon Blaster
- Rip Rod
- Night Shifter
You also has a livery editor for all the cars, and can be uploaded online and download the liveries that others have shared (cue the itasha mobiles). The cars also has a rarity system, which will be explained in the future.
If it can be as any good as Hot Wheels Turbo Racing, Hot Wheels Unleashed should be another fun arcade racer. But for now, we will have to wait and see if it’s any good.
Hot Wheels Unleashed is coming to PS4, PS5, PC (Steam), Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Switch on September 30.
