Gran Turismo 7 is one of the games that will be part of the Olympic Esports Series for 2023.
The event will begin sometime mid-April with an online time trial. The faster times will then be invited to compete at the finals in the first Olympic Esports Week, an in-person event held from July 22-25 in Singapore.
More news on the exact timing of the online time trials going live, as well as the car and track, should be announced soon.
The format should be similar to 2021’s Olympic Virtual Series, which ran on GT Sport, the previous entry of the series. The finals saw 16 players shortlisted, including a Malaysian. Italy’s Valerio Gallo won the previous event, which was an online-only affair.
The Olympics Esports Series has caught flak among gamers as the games they endorsed are not what esports goers expected. Popular esports genres like MOBAs and shooters are noticeably absent, as the Olympics’ selection of games is based on having them being a sim of an established sport. Gran Turismo 7 is here to represent motorsport, which isn’t a medal event yet in the actual Olympics.
