Fantasy Strike Goes Free-To-Play, Adds Two More New Characters

Accessible fighting game Fantasy Strike has dropped one more barrier so that you too can get into fighting games. The monetary barrier. It’s now free-to-play.

For Fantasy Strike, free-to-play means all access to characters- a bit different from most fighting games that sell characters as DLC. No grinding needed to unlock them either.

Speaking of characters, the game adds two new characters into the roster. Quince, with the ability to produce doppelgangers for mix-up potential and Onimaru, who has characteristics of a grappler (slow movement, armour) but he has a huge sword good for poking.

Fantasy Strike will let you buy the core pack (included for players that bought the game previously). This unlocks five more game modes:

  • Arcade Mode
  • Survival
  • Boss Rush
  • local versus
  • online friend matches

Everyone has access to training mode and online matches (ranked and casual) via matchmaking plus versus mode against AI.

There will be new paid cosmetics (costumes, intro animation, win poses). And there is also a subscription called Fantasy+ which adds advanced replay search, replay controls where you can move the time back and forth by frame and special Master Costume to unlock. This is for more hardcore players willing to put the time to master the game.

In any case, the free-to-play option sounds generous enough for those wanting to dip their toes into fighting games, or just want another fighting game on the side. Unfortunately, you still have to buy that core pack to play with friends- local or online, which may be a deal-breaker for some.

Fantasy Strike is out now on PS4, PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch.
