Colony Builder/Management Game Rimworld Getting Free Update, New Expansion Coming Soon

Rimworld, the colony-builder and management game with simple graphics but depictions of lost limbs and organs, is getting a free update as well as a paid expansion.

The 1.3 update will add a bunch of new and also improved features which include the following:

  • New pens-and-fences system for animals
  • Search bars on interface
  • Reworked facion goodwill system
  • New enemy AI when breaching defences
  • Drag-move fighters to arrange in a line
  • Move a downed person anywhere, not just direct to beds
  • Colonists can carry medicine on their inventory
  • Characters now render more efficiently
  • Beards

As for the new paid expansion, it will be called Ideology. This will add way-of-life systems for your colonists to follow. So yes, you can make very specific cults or some weird beliefs as a result, including, as the post from the developers gives some examples, “tree-worshipping cannibals who carve skulls into every piece of furniture, or blind tunnelers who shun the light, or transhumanists obsessed with perfecting the human form using exotic technology.”

There’s a lot to customise your colony’s belief, which led to the many colourful examples.

The Ideology expansion also adds a new quest category where you can send your colonists to go inside ancient structures to find treasures, new dryad creatures, and also a new ending too. There’s no release window for when the Ideology expansion comes out for now.

Rimworld’s 1.3 update is close to ready, it’s now available on Steam’s preview branch (right-click, properties, beta tab) and will be properly live “in about 2 weeks, though this could change.”
