Bravely Default Is Getting Remastered For Switch 2

Square Enix revealed a remaster for the Nintendo 2DS RPG Bravely Default is coming to the Switch 2.

Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster was revealed with a CG trailer, which may have mistakenly given false hopes for Final Fantasy IX fans. No, that’s not Princess Garnet/Dagger, that’s just Agnes.

Of course, the reason why most fans may have been bamboozled is that the CG trailer depicts the characters in normal proportions, whereas the actual Bravely Default games uses stylised chibi forms. The announce trailer here is cut in a different way than how it was revealed during the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct.

Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster will be a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive release, bringing the turn-based battles using the series’ Brave & Default battle system and job system (classes) with a new coat of graphical polish.

In battles, you can accumulate brave points (BP) by staying in Default which improve defence, or spend BP by doing a Brave which increases the amount of actions a party member can do in a turn. The strategy of finding the flow when to Brave and when to Default gives it a different spin to more typical JRPG combat systems.

Bravely Default follows the adventure of Tiz, Agnes, Edea and Ringabel to free crystals from being swallowed into darkness.

For the HD Remaster, Bravely Default will have higher definition graphics (not 4K but just as the title say, HD resolution), redesigned UI, the ability to fast forward events and two new mini-games.

The network features of the original 3DS release (i.e. StreetPass) has been redesigned to work with Nintendo Switch 2’s “free network connectivity”. The Switch 2 is capable of connecting with other Switch 2s via local wireless, which should be close enough to implement some of the StreetPass network features in the town-building system the game has.

Bravely Default inspired the releases of more innovative yet smaller-scaled RPGs by Square Enix like the Octopath Traveler series. Bravely Default itself has had a direct sequel (Bravely Second: End Layer), and a new numbered entry (Bravely Default II) with no relation to the events of the first title on the original Switch.

Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster has no release date yet.

Square Enix also announced that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is coming to Switch 2. The publisher is among the many third-parties that will have games coming to Nintendo’s new console.
