Balan Wonderworld Reveals New Gameplay Details Of First Chapter, Includes Quick-Time Events

Square Enix has shared some more new details about its upcoming 3D platformer, Balan Wonderworld.

In the game, there will be 12 worlds, all located inside the hearts of troubled souls. The first chapter, “The Man Who Rages Against The Storm”, will be about Jose Gallard, a farmer who is literally mad at a storm that struck his corn farm.

Chapter 1 will have a world littered with crops and farming tools, reflecting of the person you are in.

Several costumes can be found in Chapter 1, and each with different abilities. Some can let you reach high places (Elastiplant), others let you jump further (Jumping Jack). Expect to see at least three more costumes earnable in Chapter 1.

Also, in the levels, there will be a floating top hat. Collecting it will start “Balan’s Bout”, a “Visual Quick-Time Event” as Square Enix puts it. Press the prompted buttons quickly and accurately while Balan does cool stuff on screen and get rewarded with drops and Balan statues.

The new details here make it seem like Balan Wonderworld have more in common with Psychonauts than previously thought. The whole “world inside a troubled soul” part is very familiar if you played Double Fine’s 3D platformer. Though Balan Wonderworld looks to be more of a wholesome romp.

Balan Wonderworld will be out on March 26, 2021 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch, with PC (Steam) one day later on March 27 for Asia. The PS4 and Xbox One versions support free next-gen upgrades to PS5 and Xbox Series respectively.
