The next indie two-player puzzler from Total Mayhem Games, We Were Here Tomorrow, will launch in a couple of tomorrows. October 20, to be precise.
The fifth numbered entry to the We Were Here series, where the even numbered titles have obvious subtitle puns (We Were Here Too, and We Were Here Forever), We Were Here Tomorrow takes you and one other player to the tomorrow of yesterday: it’s retro-future themed. Imagine synthwaves, ambient neon glow, all of that rad 80s aesthetic that forever looks like yesterday’s tomorrow.
We Were Here Tomorrow will see two players having to solve puzzles only by working together. Each player has a different set of tools to use, players will split up and communicate with walkie-talkies, and combine the different perspectives to solve puzzles “that challenges the rules of time, gravity and space.”
If you enjoy the puzzles in Big Walk where multiple people need to coordinate what they know and what they should be doing, We Were Here Tomorrow is a more intimate version of that, as it’s strictly a two-player co-op game.
For fans of the We Were Here series, We Were Here Tomorrow will contain more lore that connects the game with the previous four mainline entries. Specifically for this game, players will be uncovering the mysterious experiments of Norček Industries and its missing research team. A nice change of pace from the spooky, chilly houses of past entries.
If you’re new, that’s okay too. The game is also described as a standalone experience. Just hop in if you think the retro-future theme looks cool and you have someone to play this with.
Of course, it can’t be an 80s-themed game released today without a synthwave soundtrack. Synthwave as a genre isn’t technically invented in the time period despite major artists all experimented in the new form of electronic music. But the movement that really got going in the 2010s to evoke the vibe and aesthetic of retro has since become associated with the time period which it intends to capture. It’s nice to see such songs from the genre to appear in a video game, like how it’s now part of the Forza Horizon series.
We Were Here Tomorrow will also feature crossplay across all three supported platforms.
We Were Here Tomorrow will be out on October 20 for the PS5, PC (Steam) and Xbox Series X|S.
