Day 3 of the GM GOTY Awards 2019 see a returning favourite category: Best Remake/Remaster. As games and gamers are old enough to crave the nostalgia of past titles but through a modern lens- be it a remaster or a full remake- this category will most likely have a contender year in year out.
Either the game holds up really well or the new release spruced up in a major way that made us love the same game all over again
- Catherine Full Body
- Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled
- Halo: Reach
- Medievil
- Resident Evil 2
Deliberations Summary
The description of this category exemplifies the spread of nominations this year. Halo: Reach, despite being released way late in this year and has its own plate of ongoing issues of the remaster, is still a strong contender because A: It’s Halo: Reach and B: Having it on various platforms with a good price helps.
On the more faithful remaster front, Medievil delivered what you’d expect from a PS1 game but with visuals built from the ground-up with modern quality-of-life changes. Catherine: Full Body adds more content that’s seamless and desired by the community (shoutout to the online multiplayer mode). Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled went above and beyond with its faithful remake by adding post-launch support via a Battle Pass-like content drop, with Spyro, among others, being playable.
These are all strong remakes and remasters, but Resident Evil 2 wins by a long shot, with unanimous agreement.
Resident Evil 2 remakes not the exact game, but what the idea of the 1998 survival horror game. Bringing in the strong visuals of the new RE Engine, a reimagined setting of the second game and the rock-solid gameplay of the over-the-shoulder gunplay from Resident Evil 4 onwards, is quite the strong mix of cocktail. The gameplay is still tense. The visuals are lovely and grotesque at the right places. And it’s worthy of the Resident Evil 2 title.
Congratulations to Resident Evil 2 for winning the GM GOTY Award for Best Remake/Remaster! They do it!
