Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Details Gadget Customisation

A new info drop by Sega for the upcoming arcade racer Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has appeared. And it’s all about the gadgets system.

In Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, players can equip gadgets. Not to be confused with power-ups, the ones you pick up during a race. Rather, these are a set of passives that can change the way you drive, or bring that edge you need to finish first more consistently in this chaotic racing game.

Gadgets are accrued as players complete more races, so the longer you play, the more options start to open up. You have limited slots to equip the gadgets, and each gadget can vary in how much slot they take.

And more importantly, some gadgets have good synergy with each other, so fans of RPG-style builds should have fun figuring out the right loadouts that work with their driving style. From reducing the RNG-ness of power-up drops to doubling down on your drift skills by increasing the speed boost from a doing so, you can tailor the gadgets to bring more advantages toward your natural driving style, or have it the other way around by adopting a different style of racing based on what gadgets you got equipped.

From our time with the Closed Beta test, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds play surprisingly a lot more to Mario Kart than any other previous Sonic Racing or Sonic & All-Stars Racing games. Though with Nintendo actually releasing a new Mario Kart game this year that coincides the launch of the new console, the Nintendo Switch 2, CrossWorlds will find some tough competition if it releases this year.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorld is coming to the PS4, PS5, PC (Steam, Epic Games Store), Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. No release date has been given.
