At Evo 2025, Sega gives another glimpse of that new Virtua Fighter game still referred as “New Virtua Fighter Project.” The upcoming fighting game has a few teasers here and there, but this is a good first look of actual gameplay.
Akira and Sarah Bryant, two iconic characters of the series, is seen here engaged in fisticuffs in this game’s take for a training stage: a transforming XR stage.
The 3D fighter looks fast, the animations fluid, and with more restraint on the particle effects. This is no Tekken, the martial arts on display here are more grounded.
Though everyone will be talking about the close-up shot of Akira getting kicked in the face. This is developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, so if you love that parts where Like A Dragon games do a close-up shot of the unlucky goon Kiryu punched and kicked, well you should get a kick of these, as the fighting game community would call it, non-X-ray X-ray shots, in reference to Mortal Kombat’s more visceral depiction of the same gimmick.
It lacks UI and voice grunts of the characters, so this is still a work-in-progress. But expect to hear more news at Tokyo Game Show 2025, to be held on September 25-28.
This new Virtua Fighter game still has no release date. But there will be another Virtua Fighter game release later this October in the form of Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. World Stage.
