Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition is supposed to be available now as of October 13, but as of October 15, the new version, a remaster if you will, of the 2011 RTS game has been temporarily removed from sale.
On socials, Sega posted that “we agree that the current experience is not where it needs to be” and has seen the overwhelmingly negative reaction from fans and critics. The Steam page for Total War: Shogun 2 – Complete Edition sits at Overwhelmingly Negative, and currently the option to purchase a copy is now removed. Players that did purchase Complete Edition still has access to the game.
This new edition, which involved developers Creative Assembly and development partner Mataboo, has been lambasted by fans over its bugginess, and more damning, alleged use of AI-generated art assets, as there were not disclosure of generative AI use.
The good news is that the original Total War: Shogun 2 is now relisted. With the release of Complete Edition, it was supposed to be that the original Shogun 2 will then be only available for purchase by getting the Complete Edition. With the Complete Edition now temporarily removed from sale, that would have meant there would be no way to get your hands on the classic version, but it’s back to being available.
This is a messy outcome for what otherwise should be a typical re-release version with updated visuals and quality-of-life updates. On paper, Shogun 2: Complete Edition should be a fine product, but as fans have collectively agreed, the execution was just not up to par.
The original Total War: Shogun 2 is available for PC (Steam).
