Underspace Is A Freelancer Spiritual Successor With A Tinge Of The Lovecraftian, Entering Early Access This April

Underspace is an upcoming space sim RPG in the veins of Freelancer, developed by Pastaspace Interactive.

You may not have heard of the studio, but you may have encountered the work of one of the developers under Pataspace- Trainwiz. He’s the guy that created a mod that changes dragons into Thomas The Tank Engine in Skyrim, and also the same person behind the Thomas mod in Starfield.

Trainwiz is leading the team at Pataspace that are working on Underspace. The game has been under development in the past six years, was the subject of a successful Kickstarter campaign, and is now ready for an Early Access release working with new publisher Camlann Games.

Underspace lets you roam the open world of outer space, travelling from star to star (all 70 star systems are hand-crafted). Players take control of Kardoz, a noble that has fallen from grace and is now living the life of a starchaser.

What sort of adventures you will undertake in Underspace is for you to decide for yourself. From hunting eldritch monsters (over 20 unique bosses available) to teaming up with pirates, from pillagine ancient star cities to looting fallen space fighters. The press release uses the term “play your way” to describe this, and if you’re familiar with the old Freelancer games, this should all sound familiar.

You can recruit NPCs to join your squadron, each with their own backstories to discover and special missions to partake.

And of course, the combat will involve some dogfighting as you have manual control of your spaceship during these encounters. There are more than 60 different ships to pilot and over 150 different equipment pieces to customise your character.

Online multiplayer and mod support are currently in the works as well.

Underspace will enter Early Access on April 10 on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG).
