Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3 Takes The Ninth Slot For EVO 2017

For EVO 2017, the ninth game to be competed was open to voting. Nine other games, and their community, have to band together and vote by donating to charity. With the votings closed it has now been revealed that Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3 will take the main stage once again, possibly for one last hurrah.

The voting system has been a talked about issue in the FGC, as it is deemed unfair due to the unproportionate size of each of the nine communities. Mortal Kombat XL, Marvel and Killer Instinct are pretty big compared to say, Niddhogg, or Windjammers or even the still unreleased ARMS which is an entirely new IP with no dedicated community yet. But still, in the end of the day, all the money, totalling $150,000+ USD, goes to charity and these games can still have a presence at Manadalay Bay later this July, but it will not have the prestige of being a proper tournament at EVO.

Marvel taking the vote should be a fit farewell to the beloved series, as Marvel VS Capcom Infinite will probably take its place once that is released later this year. But who knows? If Infinite is too different it could split the community. This is what happened with Smash- there’s still a dedicated and growing community for Super Smash Bros. Melee because recent Smash titles is too distinct to each other at top level play.

The PS4 version of Marvel will be played at EVO, according to Joey Cuellar, head of EVO.

Marvel will be joining Street Fighter V, King Of Fighters XIV, Super Smash Bros. For WiiU, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Guilty Gear Xrd Rev 2, BlazBlue Central Fiction, Injustice 2 and Tekken 7 as the games to compete in EVO 2017.
