Tales of Kenzera: Zau is the debut game by Surgent Studios, founded by Assassin’s Creed Origins voice actor Abubakar Salim.
The 2.5 metroidvania/search-action now has a firm release date, April 23. And interestingly, it will launch day 1 on PS Plus Game Catalog, available for PS Plus Extra subscribers and higher tiers.
Tales of Kenzera: Zau is the next EA Originals game, so this is an “indie-style” game rather than an indie game given the high-profile publisher backing. But you can expect some side-scrolling action with platforming that involves air dashes and combat that involves flashy attacks not too dissimilar to Ubisoft’s Prince Of Persia: The Lost Crown.
Players take control of Zau, a warrior-shaman who is seeking out the God Of Death to bargain with him and bring his beloved Baba back from the dead. And this will take him to traverse through Kenzera, a mystical realm inspired by tales of the Bantu people that hails from southern Africa.
Zau wields two masks, the Moon and Sun masks, which grants him different abilities, and can be further upgraded as two separate skill trees.
Tales of Kenzera: Zau is one of two games that will launch on PS5 day-1 as part of PS Plus Game Catalog. The PS5 port for Dave The Diver will launch day-1 this month too.
Tales of Kenzera: Zau will launch on PS5, PC (Steam), Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch on April 23.
