Firaxis is slowly revealing the 18 civilisations playable in the upcoming 4X game Civilzation VI. After America and England, now it’s time to look further east for the next two staple civs to be announced: Egypt and Japan.
Egypt is now under the rule of Cleopatra, the Queen of the Nile. As such, she gains bonus yields on improvements and districts build beside a river. With War Chariots as her unique unit and a Spinx unique improvement that boosts culture (with more bonuses when build next to a wonder), Egypt remains a great wonder builder. Though they now have extra bonuses to trade with other civilisations, so there is an incentive to make diplomatic ties rather than straight-up turtling.
Speaking of turtling, Japan’s leader in Civ VI is Hojo Tokimune. (No, that is not the Triforce, it’s the Hojo clan symbol). He is known to defend Japan from the Mongolian invasion, with some help from divine intervention by way of typhoons.
This is referenced in his unique ability- Divine Wind (which translates to Kamikaze in Japanese) that gives Japanese units bonus strength when fighting at coastal tiles- both land and sea units. The Japanese retains their Samurai unique unit that fights at full strength even when damaged. Perfect for island defences.
Another cool addition to the Japanese is the Electronics Factory, replacing the factories. It gives additional production to the city and any other city close to it. Japan’s other unique ability, Meiji’s Restoration, grants better bonuses when building districts adjacent into each other, just like real Japanese cities.
While building districts close together makes it easier to defend a city, but wouldn’t it be dangerous in case of, say, a nuclear attack? Better make sure history don’t repeat itself if you’re playing as Hojo.
We now have 4 civs revealed in this quick video form. With 16 more in the way, with China and possibly Spain and India be making a return, it will be interesting to see when will the entirely-new civs to be revealed.
Civilization VI will be releasing on October 21 on PC.
