Capcom’s upcoming fighting game Street Fighter 6 gets a good load of new info revealed at Tokyo Game Show 2022 via Capcom’s own online program. Just this new trailer alone is packed with new reveals and details, so let’s unpack what’s been announced:
First, four characters have been revealed to join the Street Figther 6 launch roster. Sumo wrestler E. Honda, yoga master Dhalsim, tour guide Blanka and vagrant hobo Ken are back with new moves to their kit. Blanka now can set up traps using Blanka-chan dolls now, for example.
This leaves all but one more of the original World Warriors, the character roster from the original arcade release of Street Fighter II, confirmed for Street Fighter 6. Zangief is surely coming, right?
The trailer confirmed another speculation on the World Tour mode, the single-player campaign/story mode. You get to create your own character, with a robust character creator with tons of sliders. And that can only mean one thing: huge freedom to make the prettiest/sickest/cursed characters to hit the streets looking for a fight.
The fights are also not necessarily one-on-one affairs. It can be one versus many, and even at one point looks like a side-scrolling beat-em-up ala Final Fight.
Every character will start their World Tour at Buckler Security in Metro City, where there will be guided by “Coach” Luke early in your adventure. Later on, you’ll get to meet Masters that can teach your created character Master Actions. These include Ryu’s Shoryuken and Chun-Li’s Spinning Bird Kick. These Master Actions can also be used while roaming about the city as a traversal move.
During fights using your character, Master Actions consumes Drive Gauge- that’s how the game balance out the weird moveset you can build.
Opponents get stronger as you progress in World Tour, and you can get new drip (clothing) at the Drippin’ Style shop. Clothing items also confers stat points, fascinatingly.
World Tour looks like a compelling mode for casual fighting game fans looking for new experiences.
Speaking of casual fighting game fans, there’s also Extreme Battle, available in Fighting Ground. Extreme Battle matches let you set a custom Rule to win the match, and a Gimmick. Examples of custom Rules include being first to score five knockdowns. Gimmicks include a stampeding bull and floating Tesla coils. It’s all wild, goofy stuff to balance out the pristine, pure fighting game experience that’s also in Street Fighter 6.
But that’s not all, you can also bring your character to visit the Battle Hub. It’s essentially the online lobby for Street Fighter 6, only you navigate it as if you are visiting an arcade center.
Up to 100 players can hang out in the Battle Hub, use emote and chat, and sit down at the arcades to play some sets. Online matches will see the characters sitting on arcade cabinets placed back-to-back, and other folks can congregate around and spectate the fight.
There are also tournaments and scheduled events you can participate, the Hub Goods Shop to buy new gear and a DJ Floor to just chill and dance.
Battle Hub sounds more and more like a hub for an MMO game than it is a fighting game online lobby.
Street Fighter 6 will host a closed beta test for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam) with cross-play enabled. That will be held from October 7-10. You can register here.
