Sony Responds to Microsoft’s Cross-platform Invite

A day after Microsoft made it possible for Xbox cross-platform play, Sony has their take on the matter.

As we previously reported, Microsoft has now made it possible for Xbox One players to play together with the other platforms online. Not only that, they made an unofficial invite to the folks over at Sony to do the same from their end, today, Sony has a response to whether they are interested in working with Microsoft.

“PlayStation has been supporting cross-platform play between PC on several software titles starting with Final Fantasy 11 on PS2 and PC back in 2002,” reads the statement from the corporation. We would be happy to have the conversation with any publishers or developers who are interested in cross platform play.”

While the message from Sony is a positive one, there are no concrete plans on the table of a potential deal with Xbox Live and Microsoft.

Rocket League was the first game to take advantage of this new initiative, allowing for Xbox One players to engage in competition with their PC counterparts. While PS4 already allows PSN players to match up with those on Steam, there is not cross-console play yet. This could set to be changed as Chris Charla mentioned in our earlier report,

“In addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we’re enabling developers to support cross-network play as well. This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks–including other consoles and PC networks.”

This could hopefully mean an end to console segregation, and is an excellent move on Microsoft’s part. Let’s just hope Sony is willing to play ball.
