Shovel Knight Showdown Has An Elaborate Way To Unlock All Characters, And Also A Cheat Code For It

Shovel Knight Showdown is a platform fighter based on the 2D platformer Shovel Knight. Developers Yacht Club Games have detailed how the game handles how you get new characters, colour palettes, and costumes on the Playstation Blog.

Similar to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate you don’t begin with the full roster unlocked. A nod to classic games, which the game series is a nod too.

But Yacht Club explains in great detail why they choose to do so. They want players to get all the base game modes from the get-go, but still reward players that put in time and effort playing it. You will need to do feats (in-game achievements) to unlock extra colours, for example.

For character unlocks, it’s a mix of progressing in Story Mode and how much time is played in other modes including multiplayer.

But Yacht Club also considered those that just wanted to have all characters unlocked, like for those that just don’t want to bother with unlocking or for tournament setups. Handily, there’s a solution for that, that is also a nod to past games: cheat codes.

To unlock all characters temporarily, hold the cancel button on the Shovel Knight Showdown title screen and input:

up, up, right, down, left, left

To unlock all characters permanently, hold the cancel button on the Shovel Knight Showdown title screen and input:

up, up, left, up, up, right, up, down, up

It’s a neat compromise, and it goes to show how much thought was put in order to nail down content unlocks should work these days for fighting games. The cheat code for temporarily unlocking all content is something other games should consider, especially for fighting games.

Shovel Knight Showdown will launch on December 10th for the PS4, PS3, PC, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Wii U, Mac, Linux and Amazon FireTV. It is available as a standalone title or part of the Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove as a free update.
