Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Was Initially A Tenchu Game

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is such an interesting game. This is the next game by From Software, the team now famous for the Dark Souls series and is being published by Activision, something you don’t expect. Though they have dabbled with publishing games from Japanese developers such as PlatinumGames.

The game itself, set in feudal Japan where shinobis and samurais were prominent in that part of the world, looks like it would fit as a Tenchu game. Tenchu is a long-running series where you play as a ninja, which From has picked up its rights in recent years.

In an interview with Gamesindustry.biz, it was revealed to be so, at the start at least. “When we originally set out to create something different from Dark Souls and our previous titles, we thought it would be interesting to make a Japanese themed game,” said Yasuhiro Kitao, community manager at From Software.

“So from that we started going in the direction of the shinobi and ninja, and of course Tenchu was an IP with that history; that was the original impetus for this project.”

However, as development continued, the game moved away from its Tenchu roots.

“As we developed and as we partnered with Activision, and started building it together, it started becoming its own thing,” Kitao said. “And the game we wanted to make was no longer just Tenchu, so it really evolved into its own thing.”

Activision was one of the companies approached by From Software to pitch what we now know as Sekiro, which the publisher find hard to pass.

Robert Conkey, producer at Activision said to Gamesindustry.biz : “When From Software knocks on your door and says ‘hey, we wanna make a game,’ you have only one answer right?”

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice will be released on March 22nd, 2019 for the PS4, PC and Xbox One.
