Rainbow Six Siege Was Set For A Price Hike, But Fan Feedback Stopped It From Happening

Rainbow Six Siege will be remembered as one of the games that was spotty at launch but has miraculously built a big following thanks to constant updates.

Though it is not perfect- for example, there are two different versions of the game, Standard Edition and Starter Edition, which are not only priced differently, but changes the progression. Not to mention that it still has the usual season pass and now micro-transactions that offer loot-box-esque cosmetics.

Ubisoft had announced that they are doing away with the Standard Edition, priced at $40 USD (RM119 on PS Store Asia and RM149 on Steam for Malaysia). Instead, they will offer the Advanced Edition, priced at $60 USD which includes all the features of Standard Edition plus 600 R6 credits and 10 Outbreak Packs, cosmetics tied to an upcoming in-game event.

However, loyal players of the game are not happy. A glance at the Rainbow Six subreddit right now is enough to make this point. Some of the issues that were brought up include Outbreak Packs are only purchasable with real money, new players getting such packs leaving the old guard hanging, and a worry that it will halt the growth of the playerbase thanks to the price hike.

Ubisoft has since backed down on the plans. The Standard Edition will remain available, veteran players who has been playing since March 6th of last year will get a new Ash Sidewinder Elite skin. In addition, the Starter Edition, that is priced cheaper but makes the grind to unlock new character much harder, will also see some changes.

It would be a shame that Rainbow Six Siege, despite its tumultuous journey to get to where it is currently, be abandoned just because the publisher want to squeeze more money from it. So good on them knowing when to back down and listen to the fans.
