PS5 Sales Pass 40 Million In 2023

The PS5, launched in November 2020, has now sold over 40 million units worldwide as of July 16, 2023.

The console, part of the ninth generation of consoles together with Xbox Series X|S, launched at an unfortunate time during the Covid-19 pandemic. The side effect of that causing disruption of supply chains which has made finding a PS5 in stock rather rare in the first few years.

Despite that, the PS5 managed to sell 10 million units in 2021.

PS5 supply today is now in good stock, the scalpers have all gone as well, and 40 million sales is no small number. Though it will need a few more years if it ever to beat the lifetime sales of the previous generation console PS4, with the last reported sales number topping 117 million as of 2022.

The PS5 now has 2,500 games with a strong lineup of first-party exclusives under PlayStation Studios. God Of War Ragnarok, Gran Turismo 7, Horizon Forbidden West, Returnal, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales received critical acclaim from critics and fans. And that’s not to mention PS5-limited-time exclusives from other developers like the recent Final Fantasy XVI and previously Deathloop.

PlayStation’s direct competitor Xbox has stopped reporting console sales numbers, so no direct comparison between the two big console platforms can be made.

It’s also important to note that PlayStation has been the most visibly supportive of the three console makers (the other one being Nintendo) in Southeast Asia. PlayStation Asia has been investing in pop-up showcases and other marketing in this region. Most recently, Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida visited Malaysia as part of promoting the game. It’s these little things that likely has given PlayStation some boost in sales.
