PlatinumGames Receives Investment From Tencent As It Moves To Self-Publishing Games

PlatinumGames, the makers of quality character action games like Astral Chain, Bayonetta and Nier Automata, have made their intentions known that they are moving to self-publishing. In that effort, they have announced a partnership with Tencent.

“This partnership has no effect on the independence of our company, and we will continue operations under our current corporate structure,” a statement by PlatinumGames President and CEO Kenichi Sato reads.

“We hope to use this capital to strengthen our foundation as a business and expand from game development into exploring self-publishing. We also hope that this partnership can give us a wider global perspective, while still creating high-quality games that stay true to our name.”

This may ring some alarm bells, given Tencent having so much reach (and investments) poured into various publishers and developers. This includes Riot Games (League Of Legends), Epic Games (Fortnite), Grinding Gear Games (Path Of Exile) and more.

Platinum still has a few games that will not be self-published in the works. This includes Bayonetta 3 for Nintendo and Babylon’s Fall for Square Enix.
