Square Enix has released the first three “Pixel Remaster” of the classic Final Fantasy series. Final Fantasy I, Final Fantasy II and Final Fantasy III are now remastered and available for PC and mobile.
The Pixel Remaster updates all the 2D pixel graphics, rearranges the soundtrack as well as improving the gameplay and UI to modern standards. The pixel redraws are made by Kazuko Shibuya (who designed the many pixel art in their original releases) while the rearranged soundtracks have been overseen by the original composer Nobuo Uematsu.
Alongside that, the Pixel Remaster of these three games also adds other quality of life changes and extra content like a bestiary, illustration gallery, music player and an autosave system.
The first three Final Fantasy games, released originally on the NES, all have different game mechanics and standalone stories, a series staple even today. Final Fantasy I introduces the blank slate of four Warriors Of Light. Final Fantasy II replaces level ups with stats that increases the more you use it (the more MP you use, the higher the max MP you’ll get over time, for example). Final Fantasy III is the first to coin the job system where you get to switch classes as you progress, and also has a 3D remake released on PC recently.
Final Fantasy I, Final Fantasy II, and Final Fantasy III in their Pixel Remaster form is out now on PC (Steam) and mobile, with Final Fantasy IV, Final Fantasy V and Final Fantasy VI to follow at a later date. You can get the bundle of all six Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster games on Steam for RM330.72.
