In a Facebook livestream just before launch yesterday, Overwatch Game Director Jeff Kaplan said that the competitive mode for the game, removed from the open beta for some overhauling and not appearing in the final game at the moment, will be back by the end of next month.
Competitive Mode will bring the pros and those who are invested in playing Overwatch competitively, with a seasonal ranking. Seasons are announced to be three months in length instead of only a month.
There are opinions why the current implementation of its competitive mode still needs tweaking, such as this PC Gamer article. Several pro games, done during the beta period, had to improvise a few rules to make it fair.
This is unfortunate news for those looking to rise up the ranks, as the game has just launched. However, this shows how Blizzard prioritises its game to be fun and accessible for everyone first before focusing on its e-sports/competitive angle. The competitive players will surely stick around until proper ranked matches finally arrive.
If you’re still on the fence if this game is worth the hype or not, stay tuned for a review of Overwatch soon.
