On Youtube, monetization, and making a living: Fiquerie Revol speaks

Having fun is a common motivation we found when speaking to aspiring Youtubers and streamers – and Abang Nur Fikri, or FiquerieRevol/ “GamezRevol” as he is known in the gaming community, is no exception.

Having started out by playing a ton of addictive games since he was 12, Fiquerie came across Pewdiepie’s Youtube channel at 17 years old and felt compelled to check it out.

“He seemed to have a lot of fun,” Fiquerie recalled, “and it motivated me to make a (Youtube) channel myself.”

Now, apart from being a student in real life studying in GiatMARA, Fiquerie manages a small Youtube channel called “FiquerieRevol”, using it to upload gameplay and vlogs (short for video logs) of games that he plays, at least 3 times a month.

He also cites other Youtubers including Vanoss, Kotilainen and Sovietwomble as big inspirations for him when it comes to editing videos.

“I kinda love editing videos although it’s pretty stressful sometimes,” he says thoughtfully. “You need (to have) the right content and resources when it comes to editing. It takes time and a lot of effort to create great content.”

And, as with all other technology – no matter how good – sometimes things can and will go terribly wrong.

“It’s kinda stressful too when you’re editing and your software suddenly crashes or shuts down without saving. Pretty stressful right?” he laughs. “So to overcome this problem, always save every 10-30 minutes, and also keep a lot of content handy for your future editing like music, pictures and videos.”

Like TheAimGames and CallMeMok before him, however, Fiquerie takes these challenges in stride in pursuit of his dream.

“It has always been my dream to be one of the biggest Malaysian gaming Youtubers,” he says. “It’s the one big dream I would struggle for, and being an entertainer on Youtube is a great thing for me as I love to entertain and make people laugh.” Plus, despite not having made any income from Youtube yet, he would love to take his Youtube ‘hobby’ to the next level as a career path for him, owing to the fact that he just really, really enjoys it.

Given the recent Youtube changes, however, monetizing videos have become a little less straightforward – and as some might say, even obstructive to the current, major Youtube stars.

Youtube recently updated their policies on allowing content creators to monetize their videos, where content that is not advertiser-friendly may be disallowed from Google Advertising. These include:

  • Sexually suggestive content, including partial nudity and sexual humor
  • Violence, including display of serious injury and events related to violent extremism
  • Inappropriate language, including harassment, profanity and vulgar language
  • Promotion of drugs and regulated substances, including selling, use and abuse of such items
  • Controversial or sensitive subjects and events, including subjects related to war, political conflicts, natural disasters and tragedies, even if graphic imagery is not shown

This is how we imagined his face to look like when he found out about the Youtube new regulations.

Fiquerie remains hopeful for the future of Youtube and his fellow aspiring Youtubers, however.

“In my opinion, yes, Youtubers can (still) make a living out of Youtube if they are lucky enough to gain a massive audience. Their content also determines the creator’s status: the better the content, the more audience they will receive.”

That said, gamers will first need to overcome some of the major problems that face them to-date, citing “poor internet connections which cause lags” and also the lack of proper hardware specifications.

Gaming is growing – so will we see big telco brands and hardware companies sponsoring more gamers eventually? Only time will tell.
