NetEase Games Announce Open World RPG Project Mugen

NetEase Games has revealed a new game in the works by developer Naked Rain, working title Project Mugen. This is an open-world RPG set in a city.

Naked Rain is a developer team under Thunder Fire Studio with staff across Hangzhou and Montreal.

The first trailer shows off city vibes of walking across crossroads, waiting for a train and also… swinging around town? The characters are seen to do a similar swinging and wallriding action like Spider-Man does in the recent Spider-Man games. And there’s also car driving, bike riding, going to the movies and concert, and… giant enemies. Combat is action-based, with flashy moves. And if you haven’t noticed yet, there’s plenty of anime vibes going for this.

That should explain the working title of Project Mugen. Mugen means “infinite” in Japanese. (And on an unrelated note, this is also why the fighting game engine MUGEN is named as such, it can support all sorts of cool/cursed player-made creations)

“Project Mugen is our love letter to urban fantasies. We wanted to create a world that players could relate to, yet find enough mysteries to keep them coming back. The city is alive, and every player will have their unique journey through it,” said Riten Huang, Senior Marketing Director at Thunder Fire Studio.

Project Mugen will be free-to-play and is targeting to release on PS4, PS5, PC and mobile.

Project Mugen looks to be NetEase’s answer to Level Infinite’s Tower Of Fantasy and Hoyoverse’s Genshin Impact. Seems to be a trend here.

No release date is given for Project Mugen yet. The title may also change later. But pre-registration is available on the main website here.
