Modder Found A Typo In Aliens: Colonial Marines’ Buggy AI Code, Developers Gearbox Respond

Typos, it can happen, maybe some more harmful than others. But in the case of Aliens: Colonial Marines, it’s just one of its many downfalls.

Aliens: Colonial Marines was developed by Gearbox Software which showed a lot of promise during pre-release, only to see the final product being subpar. Bad AI being one of its many sins.

However, a modder, James Dickinson, made an overhaul mod of the game fixing its many issues as best as he can  last year. One of them, which makes the AI horrible, was a result of a typo.

In particular, this line of code:

ClassRemapping=PecanGame.PecanSeqAct_AttachXenoToTether -> PecanGame.PecanSeqAct_AttachPawnToTeather

We highlighted the typo. By doing this, many of the AI functions that was bounded on AttachPawnToTether rather than AttachPawnToTeather just did not trigger, hence the derpy Aliens AI. Dickinson claims it’s the biggest bug in the game. Thanks to t a typo.

The info was highlighted recently thanks to a thread on ResetEra.

As a response, developers Gearbox Studios posted a job listing for Programming Copy Editor. “Gearbox Software is looking for a capable and driven full-time engineer to review all code for typos,” reads the job description.

“Responsibilities: Review all code for typos. Just that.

“Desired Skills and Experience: Enjoys finding typos.”

Clicking Apply For Job will lead you to a questionnaire, which one of the questions asks the following: “Please respond with the correct spelling: tether or teather.”
