Eidos Montreal’s upcoming new game may not be the game Deus Ex fans are asking for right now, but might be something special for fans of the Marvel comics and movies.
Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy features the out-of-this-world ragtag group of mercenaries now mainstream enough in pop culture in a new original story. Combat looks more like the Square Enix Marvel game Marvel’s Avengers, but Guardians seem to have more of that RPG feel- from dialogue choices to XP rewards.
In an interview with RPG Site, Guardians of the Galaxy’s Senior Creative Director Jean-François Dugas have downplayed the notion that the game is an RPG first, and more of an action-adventure title.
“While there are some RPG elements, it is still an action-adventure first and foremost,” said Dugas.
The RPG elements seem to be the usual RPG-lite elements that have crept in most modern games rather than an effort to make the game be an RPG. There are abilities to unlock, and the usual upgradable abilities.
The story choices are also being downplayed, as they won’t lead to major repercussions (though they do impact the scenes you’ll see like what is shown in the gameplay reveal). The branching story is described by RPG Site as a “reverse hourglass”- narrow at the start and end but wide at the middle. So you can take different paths but ultimately the story will end in a very expected way.
As such, maybe don’t expect Guardians to be a Marvel Mass Effect or a proper RPG. So hopefully the core combat and cinematic moments really deliver since the devs are pitching the game as an action-adventure game.
Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy comes out on October 26 for the PS4, PS5, PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. For Asia, the PC version comes one day later, on October 27.
