Magic-Shooter Immortals Of Aveum Releasing This July, New Trailer Shows Gameplay

Immortals Of Aveum, the new “magic-shooter” FPS by new developer team Ascendant Studios published by EA Originals, has a new trailer.

This is a decent look at the game we only saw a glimpse of at The Game Awards 2022. The trailer shows the world of Aveum, a fantasy world filled with red, green and blue magic. The world is at constant war where you see warriors, battlemages and dragons duke it out.

The game also has some star power behind it. Protagonist Jak is played by Darren Barnet (Never Have I Ever), General Kirkan is Gina Tores (Firefly, Suits), Devyn is Antonio Aakeel (Slow Horses, I Came By) and Zendara is Luly Cowles (Roswell, New Mexico, Call Of Duty Black Ops Cold War). The actors look true to life thanks to the power of Unreal Engine 5.

Immortals Of Aveum has some frenetic magic combat seen here, switching between the three elements, unleashing crowd-control magic like a whip to bring them close to you or sending a shockwave that hits enemies from afar. You don’t seem to have wild traversal moves here, but the magic is as punchy as a regular gun in a Call Of Duty would be.

And that’s a deliberate comparison we made there. Game director Bret Robins, who previously worked on the original Dead Space at Visceral and then on several Call Of Duty titles as part of Sledgehammer Studios, initially pitched the idea of Immortals of Aveum as a game like Call Of Duty but with magic and dragons.

It’s been a while since a mainstream FPS deliberately uses magic over guns, remember Heretic? So it’s cool to see a big-budget game exploring this side of the genre.

Expect Immortals Of Aveum to contain over 25 different spells, unlockable gear, some side quests, puzzle-solving and boss fights to go with its bombastic cinematic single-player-only campaign.

Immortals Of Aveum releases on July 20 for the PS5, PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, EA App) and Xbox Series X|S.
