Letting Characters In The Quarry Mess Up Is Morbidly Fun – First Impressions

Personally, I am a sucker for these interactive horror dramas that not only carry themselves with their story but let you just unalive your playable characters and keep it going regardless. The Quarry does that brilliantly as the team at Supermassive Games has turned it up a notch to make this one, not only engaging but also, very accessible for everyone.

We get to play a preview slice of the game and it’s already showcasing its horror flick prowess within the two chapters that we got to play with.

Summer Camp Shenanigans

The Quarry, according to its Steam page blurb, is where you see “nine teenage counselors plunged into an unpredictable night of horror”. And whilst it doesn’t specifically show us what the terrors lie within the night (more on that later), its tension and suspense make it rather enthralling as you react towards everything the game throws at you.

And while we also can’t talk about the story due to it being quite a big spoiler on its own, what we can tell you is that the gameplay has been quite an improvement from their previous endeavors.

For this I’ve played the preview slice twice, once with all the “correct choices” and the other one being the bonkers “eh, let’s see what happens” choices that might have involved missing a lot of QTEs for the heck of it. With its intended results, of course.

But fret not, one of the new features that I highly applaud the dev team for working on, is the various Accessibility choices that you can fine-tune to make most, if not all, of the QTEs, be easier, or even make your character walk automatically if you wish so.

Although, that doesn’t mean you won’t see your character messing up because you can mess it up still if you wish your one of nine playable characters suddenly become “unavailable” to you in the future chapters and it is fun seeing the work they did to make it fun to watch.

Besides that, controls are mostly refined from the likes of The Dark Pictures Anthology, with noticeable improvements on the combat side, so it’s nice to see them tweaking for the better.

There are also some hints of their multiplayer stuff that could see you playing with 7 other friends so that might be some interesting mechanics that could make The Quarry more fun.

Closing Thoughts

The Quarry has the makings of a great horror drama game that perhaps could parody the Netflix horror flicks and maybe even surprises a few who would want to play something horror-ish and yet enjoy their time, alone or with friends.

The Quarry is released on June 10 for both PlayStation and Xbox consoles, along with PC. This Preview Build is provided by 2K Asia.
