Another sad news of a gaming studio shutting down. Guerrilla Games Cambridge, last known to develop the multiplayer VR game RIGS has been confirmed to be closing down.
In a report by Gamesindustry.biz, Sony has made the decision to lay off all the staff helping them relocated to other studios as well as moving them to other projects within Sony if possible. Sony decided that “in order to deliver on our strategic objectives, it is necessary to make some changes to the European studios structure”.
While Sony acknowledges it will lose a ton of talent, especially those that have been familiar with PS VR as well as how great the output the studio has produced, it is still a necessary move for them moving forward.
Guerrilla Games’ main studio in Amsterdam, however, will not be affected. The team is finishing Horizon Zero Dawn that will be launching relatively soon.
It is unfortunate to see Guerrilla Games Cambridge, formerly SCEE Cambridge Studio close down, as the studio has a long lineage of development. They have various underrated IPs including MediEvil and Primal for the PS1 and PS2 respectively. RIGS seem to hold promise as well. Last we heard of it they were adding more content to the game as a free update.
We wish all the affected personnel of the news the best of luck.
