GM GOTY Awards 2022 – Best Game We Didn’t Play

The game we love best from afar and pining to play

As much as we try to cover video game releases every year, there is a limit to our coverage due to limited resources (manpower, budget, time, etc.).

But in 2022, we here at GM have been covering more games than ever before. It’s partly due to how we are now a better-established site, and also due to all of us here having Game Pass.

There was a back-and-forth to retire or replace this category as there are not that many games we like this year that we somehow didn’t play. UItimately, we kept this category in, for one last year at least, because we do have a sole nomination.

Past Winners: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Microsoft Flight Simulator (2020), Disco Elysium, Yakuza 6: Song Of Life,

How The Winner Is Decided (Deliberations Summary)

Winner by default.

Somehow, everyone in the crew has circle-dodged the elephant in the room. Elden Ring is understandably the biggest game of 2022, and will likely be the game of the year on many outlets’ lists. For good reason. FromSoftware evolved the soulslike/SoulsBorne formula to incorporate a full open world, but not following any open world game conventions seen in many other games with an open world. Doing so while bringing back the flexibility of builds and playstyle, something FromSoft ditched for Sekiro, has pushed Elden Ring to new heights.

But we wanted another game to win GOTY this year, so we decided to skip this title and only play it next year.

Best Game We Didn’t Play Winner

Congratulations to Elden Ring for winning Best Game We Didn’t Play! Though we can assure you that FromSoft’s next game won’t be getting this treatment.

Check out the GM GOTY Awards 2022 hub for the rest of the categories and winners. The page will be updated as we announce the winners every day until December 31.
