ScoutJLY

GM: Tell us a little about yourself – who you are, what you do as a gamer, and where can people find your content?

My name is Yap Yuien Feng. People know me as ScoutJLY. I’m studying my foundation in Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman. As a student and a gamer at the same time. I tend to prioritize my studies before gaming as my studies have more impact onmy future life than gaming. Therefore,
I always settle my school work before I game. Do check out my Facebook page at fb.com/scoutjly for my updates.

GM: How did you get into gaming? Was there a particular gaming personality that inspired you?

I started playing games when I was 6, 2 years after my dad passed away. My mom had to work to support my family, so she couldn’t care
much when I was playing in front of the computer for hours. That’s the exact year that I got short-sightedness. Hours and hours of gaming really got me into it. The first online game that I started to play was Runescape. When I was 13, I met DotA. That was the time where I started to relate Mathematics to games. I loved to play around with the timing and mana regeneration rate. Thus, I became a one trick Techies in DotA besides Omniknight. LoL released one year later and what caught my eye was the punish system implemented by Riot where you have to finish the game, or you are punished (lesser AFKs and leavers). Year by year, I learned how to become more proactive and how to deal with people in a team. Using the soft skills that I learnt from the scouts activities, I made my choice to be a competitive gamer.

GM: What’s the dream? What sort of gamer do you want to be in the future? Is gaming a potential career for you?

My dream is to work in a gaming industry. If I have the chance to choose what I want to work as I would rather become an entertainer than a professional player. But my current gaming platform limits me from that (PC). That’s the reason why I am a competitive gamer right now instead of being entertaining. I do not think that gaming is a potential career path for me. The growth of eSports in Malaysia is a little too slow for me. I cannot afford to drop out from school and pursue my gaming career because I won’t be earning enough money to survive. So far, I don’t see any offers of gaming scholarships in Malaysia. It’s for my own good to continue studying.

LOL

GM: What advice would you give to someone looking to start a gaming channel or be an eSports player?

I will advise them to think twice before making a decision. It’s not easy to start a gaming channel or be an eSports player. You have to sacrifice a lot of things including your precious time with your family. Gaining attention from the viewers is even harder, and also sponsorship. If they are doing it as a hobby, I will say yes. If they want to aim for a career with it, I will wish them all the best.

GM: What’s your view on GamerMalaya regarding the local gaming scene?

They cover the latest news on a wide variety of games, which is something good. However, there are too little announcements regarding the local gaming scenes.

GM: Lastly, why are you a part of Fundeavour? Would you recommend Fundeavour to other gamers reading this right now?

As I listed so many problems up there, Fundeavour is my ‘problem solver’. They have a community who likes to share their content. Having a Fundeavour account makes me look professional, and have more passion in gaming. Of course I will recommend Fundeavour to other gamers!
