Leaked ahead of the Ubisoft E3 2019 showcase was a new sports game of sorts called Roller Champions. And it has now been revealed in full. The game is developed by Ubisoft Montreal with Ubisoft Winnipeg and Ubisoft Pune.
A mix of roller derby and a ball game ala Rocket League, it’s a 3V3 ball game. Like roller derby, you have to do laps around the track, counterclockwise. Unlike roller derby, you have to carry a ball and then shoot it through a hoop after one lap to score a point.
But if your team can maintain ball possession over two or even three laps, you get an additional two points per lap for each dunk. So one lap- 1 point. Two is three points and three is five. The first team to score five points wins. Matches take seven minutes plus three minutes of overtime.
The game will be free-to-play and a demo is out now on PC via UPlay until June 14th.
There is potential in Roller Champions. The concept may take some explaining, and there is a learning curve to get into understanding the controls. But the momentum-heavy sports game- both rulewise and because understanding how to carry momentum from skating makes you faster- should have some appeal. It also helps that it’s free-to-play.
Roller Champions will be out sometime next year.
