For a publisher notoriously known for its aggressive DLC releases, Paradox Interactive has been quiet with new content for Colossal Order’s successful city builder, Cities: Skylines.
One year after the last expansion, now we’re getting a new one in the form of Airports.
As the name implies, this will expand the game into allowing you to create modular airports rather than just plopping a building as available in the base game.
This mechanic will sound familiar to players who have made modular parks and modular campus in past expansions. You can set the area for airports, plop the main building (which has a separate road connection that leads the entrance (“departures”) and exits (“arrivals”). You can also design your own concourse, which works like a path/road tool, to make the custom, modular airports be your own.
There will also be new progression available for modular airports. As your airports grow, you’ll unlock more building options (including decorative buildings) as well as bigger aeroplanes.
The new modular airports can also be connected to a city’s existing public transport infrastructure (such as an integrated metro station that terminates at the airport, and a bus terminal) for a faster way to move people around. And these airports don’t just move people, you can also make it haul cargo with cargo materials to support your industry and commerce zones.
With Airports, Cities: Skylines is going back with focusing on deep-diving one aspect of city-building with its expansions, rather than the smorgasbord approach of adding a little bit of everything, as seen in the previous Sunset Harbor expansion.
A free update is scheduled to arrive alongside the Airports expansion as well.
Cities: Skylines Airport expansion DLC is scheduled to arrive on January 25 on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store) as well as on consoles (PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S).
