Check Out This Comprehensive Retrospect And Critique Of The Original Mass Effect Trilogy

Mass Effect: Andromeda is out now. It may have some mixed reviews (our own take should be coming soon) but it’s definitely in line with the series’ original trilogy when it comes to its shortcomings. If you have the time, why not sit down and watch Youtuber Raycevick dissects all the three installments featuring Commander Shepard?

The three videos go in length to document the behind-the-scenes aspect of the development as well as general critique, which gives even more context why some questionable design aspectsfor the game had to be done. What kicked off the new IP? How did developers Bioware respond to feedback of the first game to make the Mass Effect 2? Why was Mass Effect 3 has fewer dialog choices?

It also highlights the changes Bioware as a company had undergone ever since being bought by EA. What was once a small studio focusing on CRPGs was then transformed to be a multi-studio organisation, leading EA’s entire RPG catalog. While it’s not highlighted for the most part in the videos, many talents have come and gone from Bioware- the doctors that founded the company, Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk retired in 2012. Casey Hudson- the person that had spearheaded Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic as well as the Mass Effect series- is now working with Microsoft. And many more.

Here’s the first one for Mass Effect. It’s a 45 minute watch- and the other two (Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3) are longer, reaching about the hour mark. But it’s worth the watch.

From the video, we can see that the Mass Effect series has its flaws and was never the perfect game series most people remembered as. And it looks like Andromeda is will continue its tradition of having some jankiness in some aspects of the game while other parts flourish.

Stay tuned as we are getting ready for a review of Mass Effect: Andromeda soon.
