Sonic Mania looks destined to be the game Sonic The Hedgehog 4 should have been: a proper continuation of the three classic Sonic games that defined the blue bomber. Spearheaded by talents that was born from the community with a proven track record, Christian Whitehead, Headcannon and Pagoda Games West have a lot to prove with Sonic Mania. The game is remixing levels of previous Sonics- adding in some new levels and abilities while still maintaining the essence of what made those classic Sonic games revered by fans until today: the speed, the momentum, the open-ended level design.
Revealed at Comic Con in conjunction to the mascot of Sega’s 25th anniversary, Sonic Mania is shown again recently at PAX West, and the good folks at IGN managed to grab hold of some gameplay footage featuring The Green Hill Zone, now remixed but familiar, and a new level called the Studiopolis. Check it out below:
To classic Sonic fans out there: is this the Sonic game you are looking for? From what we see, it’s pretty faithful to the classic ones. The aesthetic fits well and the movement seems to be right on par to what the classics should control like. But we will need to be sure to try it out first to see if it is familiar in the hands and controls as well. Expect to see more of Sonic Mania as it will release sometime in early 2017 on theXbox One, PS4 and PC.
