Walk A Day With The Eccentric Director Behind Drakengard and Nier- Yoko Taro

The man. The myth. The legend.

Yoko Taro has significantly grown in influence with the success of Nier: Automata (which has surpassed 1 million in sales), and his eccentric demeanour has been fun to watch. From rolling on the floor excited with Automata’s pre-order T-shirt to approving the work of fanart by the community, even lewd ones,

And that continues with toco toco TV’s interview. We see him doing some work, playing games at work, playing games at home, and visit a local spot in Osaka housing numerous pinball machines. All with his now iconic mask on. (Apparently there’s a small hole that could fit a straw inside that mask, and there’s not much visibility there)

On a more serious note, he talked about the collaboration work with PlatinumGames, a studio he’s a fan of, on Nier: Automata. While he may take a lot of control during the project, as noted by his colleagues over some drinks, he has massive respect to the newer generation currently working in the game industry, which helped him to spring board to success.

If anything, he sees himself as the final boss of an RPG. “One day, a hero will come to defeat me and release a new game.”

toco toco TV has done plenty of short documentaries like this depicting a life of various Japanese people. Previously they have done one for Street Fighter V pro Fuudo and Atlus’s Katsuhara Hashino.

Their scope is more than just the gaming side of things, so you should check it out if you’re interested in how other Japanese folks work and live.
